LAKE MYRTLE, FL (Mar. 27) - Senior Conor Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Western Connecticut State University baseball team scored twice in its last at-bat for a come from behind 6-5 victory over Concordia College (Wisconsin) Wednesday morning.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, until Concordia scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings for a 2-0 lead.
A pair of errors at short by Concordia resulted in four unearned runs for Western in the bottom of the sixth to give the Colonials the lead, 4-2. Freshman James Annello (Waterford, CT) led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a successful bunt by junior Jeff John (Trumbull, CT). Back to back errors by Concordia's shortstop, Brock Bateman, loaded the bases, setting the stage for a RBI singles by senior Chris Alberto (Trumbull, CT) and sophomore Scott Conetta (Garden City, NY). A Concordia throwing error allowed Alberto to score Western's fourth run of the inning.
Concordia came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh and took a 5-4 lead with an unearned run in the top of the eigth.
Western entered the bottom of the ninth down 5-4, but with one out, junior Bobby Coyne (Clinton, CT) singled to right-center. Bierfeldt followed with a triple that scored Coyne, and scored the walk-off run on a passed-ball, giving the Colonials the 6-5 win.
With the win, Western now stands at 4-8 on the season, while Concordia falls to 0-9. Today's game concludes the Colonials' Florida trip. Western's home opener with Southern Maine that had been scheduled for Saturday, March 30th, has been postponed due to soggy field conditions at Westside field. No make-up date has been announced.
