FORT MYERS, FL - The Western Connecticut State University baseball team opened its southern swing with a pair of losses to Edgewood College, 3-0 and 2-1 at Lee County PDC on Monday afternoon.
Senior second baseman Joe Costa (Hopewell Jct., NY) went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles to center field, in the third and fifth innings, respectively, for the Colonials in the opener on Monday.
Classmate Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) collected WestConn's other single as Blake Bieri (Waunakee, WI) went the distance for Edgewood.
Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) suffered the loss after allowing three runs, two of them earned on four hits. He struck out three and walked four in three and a third innings.
Senior EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) went 2-for-2 and scored the lone WestConn run. He scored when designated hitter Kevin DeCastro (Bethpage, NY) reached on an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the third inning. That run knotted the score at 1-1.
Edgwood scored the game-winning run when Jonathan Roehler (Windsor, Ont.) scored on a Tim Nunn (Napa, CA) fielder's choice in the fourth frame.
Kyle Cole (Southington, CT) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits over three innings. He struck out two and walked a pair.
WestConn takes on Wisconsin Lutheran in a doubleheader beginning at 9:00 am on Tuesday morning.
