Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Illinois College

FT. MYERS, FL – After splitting a pair with Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday, the WestConn baseball team split yet another doubleheader on Wednesday, this time against Illinois College.

The Colonials were edged in the opener, 4-3, as juniors Joe Daigle (Southington, CT) and Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT) each tallied a pair of hits to pace the Colonials.

It took the nightcap, 7-3, as senior Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) bashed a homer en route to his 2-for-3 outing.

GAME ONE

Each team scattered five hits in the early-morning start.

Junior center fielder Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT) went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored a run for the Colonials.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Illinois College scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to knot the contest at 2-2.  IC scored single runs in the fourth and sixth to go ahead, 4-2.

With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Tre' Gause (Brookfield, CT) wrapped a run-scoring single to right field, but was thrown out trying to get into scoring position.

Daniel Hedden (West Cornwall, CT) suffered the loss after yeilding three runs on four hits over five innings.  He struck out six and walked three.

GAME TWO

The Colonials and Blueboys match each other with two runs in the first and another in the third inning for a 3-3 deadlock after four innings.

WestConn, now 4-4, scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close out the scoring.

Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two runs batted in.  He also scored a pair of runs for the winners.

Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT) belted a two-run-double in the fifth-inning barrage and came around to score off of Joe Daigle's (Southington, CT) single.

Andrew Nault (Darien, CT) captured his first win of the young season after coming on in relief of starter Erik Nicholson (Old Lyme, CT) in the fifth inning.

Nault allowed just one hit over two innings.  Taylor Donofrio (Terryville, CT) worked a scoreless seventh inning.

FROM HEAD COACH JOHNNY SUSI

"Frank (Vartuli) hit one of the longest home runs I have seen in a long time, well over 400 feet.  We are getting some very exciting results from Clete (LoRusso) in the lead-off spot.  We hope to start hitting as a group."

WHAT'S NEXT

Another 9:00 am start on Thursday as the Colonials take on Wisconsin Stout.  WestConn is scheduled for a noon meeting with College of Wooster tomorrow.
