DANBURY, CT - Despite holding an early 2-0 advantage following a towering solo homer from junior outfielder Clete LoRusso (New Milford, CT), the Western Connecticut State University baseball team fell to visiting non-league foe Trinity College, 6-4, on Monday night at Westside Field. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 11-13 overall, while the Bantams improved to 13-12.
The Colonials got on the board first when junior Joel Luna (Queens Village, NY) singled down the left field line in the bottom of the second, scoring sophomore Kyle MacLean (Southington, CT), who reached on a walk. LoRusso then drilled his shot in the third, extending the lead to 2-0.
Junior right-handed hurler Andrew Fogarty (Mystic, CT) tossed a dominating performance, keeping the Bantam hitters off balance. However, the Colonials bullpen had a more difficult time as the visitors rallied to knot the score at 2-2 in the eighth. A pair of RBI singles then followed to widen the gap to 4-2.
After another pair of Trinity runs in the top of the ninth, WestConn tried to put together a rally in the bottom half of the frame. After cutting the lead to 6-4, the Colonials stranded a pair of runners on base with a lazy fly ball to right, ending the contest.
"Fogarty pitched a great game for us this evening. Unfortunately, our bullpen could not get the job done for him tonight," said WestConn head coach John Susi after the defeat.
The Colonials return to action against visiting LEC rival Eastern Connecticut on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
