MADISON, NJ – After suffering a heartbreaking extra innings loss to cross-state LEC rival Eastern Connecticut on Sunday, the Western Connecticut baseball squad rebounded with a 14-7 victory at non-league foe FDU-Florham on Tuesday evening. Seniors EJ Lavoie (East Granby, CT) and Frank Vartuli (Westport, CT) each notched three RBI's, while rookie Tyler Gibbs (New Britain, CT) pushed a pair across the plate for the Colonials. Senior starting pitcher Daniel Hedden (West Cornwall, CT) earned the win, improving to 2-3 overall, while tossing seven and striking out six for the visitors.
"It marked another strong outing for Hedden. Gibbs had two hits and played a solid right field filling a hole as classes kept many of our student-athletes behind," said WestConn head coach John Susi following the win.
In addition to the Lavoie and Vartuli efforts, junior Bill Buscetto (Old Lyme, CT) put forth a 3-for-6 performance which included a triple and a pair of runs driven in, while senior outfielder Tre' Gause (Brookfield, CT) tallied a game-high three runs scored for the Colonials.
FDU pierced the scoring column to capture a 1-0 lead in the first on a run scoring double. WestConn retaliated with the contest's next nine runs – a five-spot in the third and four in the fourth – to grab a 9-1 lead. The outburst was highlighted by a two-run blast over the center field wall from Vartuli.
The hosts tried to respond, tallying two runs in the fourth before WestConn answered with another five runs en route to the victory. With the win, the Colonials improved to 15-17 overall, while FDU dropped to 12-20.
WestConn returns to action at non-league foe Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before wrapping up the regular season slate with a doubleheader at LEC opponent UMass-Boston on Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
