PROVIDENCE, RI - After edging LEC rival UMass-Boston on Saturday, the Western men's basketball team fell at league foe Rhode Island College, 83-68, on Wednesday night. Sophomore forward Jauch Green (Hartford, CT) led the visitors with 21 points and a game-high six steals, while classmate Rashard Rodriguez (Trumbull, CT) added 13 points. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 11-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play, while RIC evened its overall record at 9-9 and 3-5.
The contest was close midway through the opening half as sophomore forward Aaron Samuel (Stratford, CT) - who finished with a game-high nine rebounds - tallied a hoop to cut the hosts' lead to 17-16. The Anchormen countered with a 12-3 run capped by a trifecta from rookie guard Jonatan Batista (Providence, RI), widening the margin to 29-19. He then drained a pair from the charity stripe before sophomore forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) hit one to make the count 44-29 at halftime.
The Colonials sliced the advantage to six points when Green converted a three-point play with 6:14 remaining in the game. However, RIC would regain its composure, stretching the gap to 78-61 when Campbell slammed one home off a feed from junior guard Malcolm Smith (Old Orchard Beach, ME) with 2:57 left. The hosts would cruise on to earn the win.
"We played a sloppy first half of basketball that we couldn't recover from. We pulled to within six points in the second half, but couldn't make one more push. I'll take responsibility for it," said Colonials head coach Jason Harlow after the defeat.
Western returns to action for yet another conference matchup when they meet visiting Southern Maine on Saturday at 3 p.m.
