Samuel & Rashard Rodriguez Guide Men’s Basketball to 88-76 Win Over RIC

DANBURY, CT – Junior guard Aaron Samuel (Stratford, CT) erupted for 15 second half points en route to a team-high 20, while classmate forward Rashard Rodriguez (Trumbull, CT) added a double-double on 18 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to lead the WestConn men's basketball squad to an 88-76 victory over visiting Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College on Monday night at the O'Neill Center's Feldman Arena. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 13-10 overall and 8-4 in league play, while the Anchormen dropped to 6-17 and 3-9.

Rookie guards Shea Tracy (New Britain, CT) and Legend Johnson (Waterbury, CT) added 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the hosts, while sophomore forward Fenton Bradley Jr. (Mansfield, CT) added nine and a game-high three blocks.

Senior guard Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, CT) led the visitors with a game-high 32 points on a scorching 9-for-17 shooting performance from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard CJ Donaldson (Bridgeport, CT) contributed 16, while junior forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) and rookie guard Adham Floyd (Worcester, MA) chipped in with 11 apiece.

WestConn dominated the boards, 42-24, while also shooting an outstanding 64% (32-for-50) from the field for the game. RIC managed just 35.8% (24-for-67) although the three-ball kept them in the game.

The Anchormen opened up the contest with a 22-16 lead capped with a pair of free throws from Campbell. The Colonials responded with a furious 12-0 run. Rashard Rodriguez ended the flurry, sinking a pair from the line, giving the hosts a 28-22 lead. They would widen the gap to 45-33 when sophomore forward Jonathan Mowatt (Waterbury, CT) buried a jumper just before halftime.

WestConn led by as many as 14 in the second half. However, the Anchormen sliced the margin to just three when junior center Grant Gillis (Jamestown, RI) converted a three-point play with 7:34 remaining.

But the Colonials quickly rebuilt their advantage, stretching the gap to 72-61 when Rashard Rodriguez connected on a free throw shortly after a trifecta from Samuel. They would coast the rest of the way.

WestConn returns to action when they host LEC cross-state powerhouse Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
