Plattsburgh State rolls over Western men, 18-2
DANBURY, CT (March, 16) — The Plattsburgh State College men's lacrosse team ran out to a 9-0 lead at the half and cruised to an 18-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
For Plattsburgh State, freshman Brendan Damm (Montauk, NY) and freshman Joey Kramer (Clifton Park, NY) each scored four goals. Senior Brett McClelland (Oswego, MY), sophomore Brendan Cefalu (East Islip, NY), and freshman James Higgins (Wading River, NY) scored two goals apiece. Junior Tom Duggan (Levittown, NY), freshman Qusarn Caldwell (Elmont, NY), junior Anthony Pafundi (Islip Terrace, NY), and freshman Matt Renko (Scotia, NY) each added one goal for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh State got things rolling quickly with an unassisted goal by Caldwell in the game's first minute. A goal by Damm midway through the first period and two by Kramer in the closing minutes gave Plattsburgh State a 4-0 lead after one quarter of play.
The Cardinals continued to dominate play in the second quarter, taking 16 shots before Western managed to take its first shot midway through the second quarter. Five more unanswered goals by Plattsburgh State made the margin 9-0 at intermission.
The visitors continued to dominate play in the third quarter adding six more goals, but with 16 seconds remaining in the period, Bonilla scored an unassisted goal to put Western on the scoreboard and trim the Plattsburgh State lead to 15-1.
After a Plattsburgh State goal early in the fourth quarter, Wilson scored the Colonials' second marker off a pass from sophomore Anthony Nejame (Danbury, CT). The Cardinals then scored the game's final two goals to make the final margin of victory 18-2.
For the game, Plattsburgh State held a 60-22 advantage in shots and a 47-35 edge in ground balls. Senior Gordie Gehring (Jamesville, NY) earned the win in goal for Plattsburgh State, recording six saves before taking a break for the second half. Sophomore Kevin Seery (East Lyme, CT) recorded 12 saves in goal for Western, but suffers the loss.
Western, now 4-2 on the season, returns to action on Tuesday, March 19th, when it hosts Kings Point at the WAC. Game time is slated for 7:00pm.
