Big first half lifts Plattsburgh State over Western men, 15-8

DANBURY, CT — The visitors from Plattsburgh State outscored the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team 8-1 in the first half, on the way to a 15-8 victory over the Colonials Sunday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Leading the Western offense were senior Ryan Foster (Ledyard, CT) with three goals, sophomore Nick Foley (Walpole, MA) and sophomore John Foristall (Danbury, CT) with two goals, and sophomore Nate Wilson (Norwich, CT) who scored once.

For Plattsburgh State, multiple goal scorers included sophomore Brendan Damm (Montauk, NY) with four goals, and seniors Robbie Ashlaw (North Syracuse, NY) and Tom Duggan (Levittown NY) who scored three times each.

Damm got Plattsburgh State on the board in the game's third minute on a goal that was assisted by Ashlaw, but Foster responded for Western a minute later to make the score 1-1.  Plattsburgh State closed out the first quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead after one period of play.

In the second quarter, Plattsburgh State outshot Western 16-7 and outscored the Colonials 2-0.  At the half, Plattsburgh's lead was 8-1.

After Plattsburgh scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 10-1 lead, Western scored four of the next five goals to narrow the margin to 11-5 going into the fourth quarter.

Defense and goaltending set the tone for the first six minutes of the final period, before Plattsburgh State scored twice to stretch its lead to 13-5.  Western again went on a 3-0 run to make the score 13-8 with six minutes to play, but Plattsburgh State score the game's last two goals for a 15-8 final margin of victory.

For the game, Plattsburgh State held a 60-31 advantage in shots and a 47-29 edge in ground balls.

Junior Kevin Seery (East Lyme, CT) recorded 16 saves in goal for Western, but suffers the loss.  Senior Andrew Hauk (Sackets Harbor, NY) made eight saves to earn the victory for Plattsburgh State.

With the loss, Western is now 1-2 on the season, while Plattsburgh State improves to 3-1. 

The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, March 12, when they host Maritime College.  Game time is slated for 7:00 pm.
