HOLDERNESS, N.H. – Freshman Cullen Roberts (Somers, Conn.) and sophomore Jake Pantani (Branford, Conn.) scored back-to-back goals midway through the fourth quarter and Western Connecticut State University went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 10-9, in Little East Conference men's lacrosse action at The Holderness School.
Roberts' goal came with 8:56 remaining in the final period with an assist from Pantani, just 27 seconds after PSU had tied the game for the final time at 7-7. Pantani followed with a goal with 5:11 on the clock, set up by junior Nick Foley (Walpole, Mass.), to give the Colonials a two-goal margin.
PSU pulled back to within a goal when freshman Nick Pino (North Andover, Mass.) scored with 3:11 to play, but junior Robbie Palazzo (Easton, Conn.) made it 10-8 for Western with 1:51 remaining. Senior Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) got the Panthers to within a goal again with 1:29 to go, but PSU couldn't get a tying goal before the clock ran out.
Western Conn. improves to 2-1 in the Little East (5-7 overall) while PSU drops to 1-2 in conference play (6-3 overall).
Pantani led the Colonials with two goals and three assists while senior Ryan Foster (Ledyard, Conn.) scored twice and set up another. Foley also finished with a goal and two assists, and junior Zach Bartlett (East Lyme, Conn.) led the defense, causing three turnovers and picking up three ground balls.
Annunciata scored a game-high three goals to lead PSU, while Pino finished with a pair of goals and junior Aaron Boss (Keene, N.H.) and Mike Trocchi (Danvers, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists each. Panther freshman Adam Haversat (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) collected a game-high six ground balls.
Plymouth State had a 46-33 advantage in shots. Western junior goalie Kevin Seery (East Lyme, Conn.) made 13 saves to post the victory. PSU was forced to used three goalies due to an injury to starter Christopher St. George (Marblehead, Mass.); senior Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Mass.) came off the bench to make eight saves in the final 42 minutes.
PSU plays again Wednesday in an LEC match-up at the University of Southern Maine (4:00 p.m.), while Western Conn. returns home to host Salem State University Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
