PURCHASE, NY - Sophomore Eric Caldwell (East Moriches, NY) and junior Robert Swensen (Danbury, CT) each scored three goals and the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 12-3 victory at Purchase College on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores Ryan Reuling (Groton, CT) and Christian Sparacino (Manorville, NY) each scored a pair of goals for the winners. Reuling and Caldwell led all players with five total points as they dished out three and two assists, respectively.
WestConn raced out to a 6-0 advantage in the first quarter. Swensen capped off the early goal barrage with his sixth marker of the season with 2:17 remaining in the quarter.
Following Panther Ben Erkan's 11th goal of the season, with 11 seconds left in the opening period, the Colonials went on a five-goal-unanswered run and led 11-1 with just 2:09 elapsed in the final stanza.
Perry Cassidy (East Setauket, NY) earned the victory in goal for WestConn and is now 3-3 in the early going. He made eight saves before handing over the crease to Colin Neal (Rockville, CT) for the final 5:27. Neal made a pair of stops.
Matt Sayegh made 15 saves for the Panthers and faced 44 shots as the Colonials' finished with a 21-shot advantage on the afternoon.
"The team played a great first half offensively and defensively," acknowledge WestConn's third-year head coach Ryan Cavanagh. "Perry (Cassidy) made some clutch save early on and Bryan Murchison (Huntington, NY) owned the face-offs."
Following the game, which was quickly arranged after the Colonials' weekday game at USMMA was postponed, WestConn improves to 3-3 on the season.
Purchase falls to 2-4 on the season.
The Colonials return to action this Wednesday when they play host to Farmingdale State College. Game time against the Rams is set for 7 pm.
