NEW LONDON, CT – For the second consecutive contest, the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. This time falling at non-conference foe Coast Guard on Tuesday night. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 2-3 overall, while the Bears earned their third-straight shutout victory, improving to 3-1.
Coast Guard held a slight edge in shots, 9-6, and corner kicks, 9-7. Junior goalkeeper Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) played the entire first half and turned aside one Bear shot, while rookie Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) entered for the second stanza to register two saves and take the loss for the Colonials. Senior netminder Jake Sorenson (Oakdale, CT) notched three saves and improved to 3-0 for the hosts.
The Bears netted the game-winning goal in the 61st minute of play when senior Austin Read (Takoma Park, MD) knocked a header into the twine off a cross on a free kick from junior Patrick Palermo-Re (Manassas, VA). WestConn added pressure in the final 10 minutes of play but were unable to earn the equalizer. A header from rookie Ricardo Rodriguez (Danbury, CT) sailed high before senior Darion Richeme' (Danbury, CT) just missed the net when he fired a shot wide with 30 seconds remaining.
"We had some quality scoring opportunities but could not convert. It was a tough loss to swallow but we never quit and worked hard in the final minutes. We're looking forward to turning things around in our home opener on Saturday," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the game.
The Colonials return to action when they open Little East Conference play against visiting Southern Maine on Saturday at 11 a.m.
