DANBURY, CT – Four different players tallied goals as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team upended visiting non-conference foe Albertus Magnus College, 4-0, Tuesday night at The Westside Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Colonials improved to 8-6 overall, while the Falcons dropped to 6-6-1.
WestConn controlled the tempo for the majority of the contest. The hosts outshot the visitors, 20-2, while racking up 10 corner kicks compared to just two for the visitors.
"It was nice to bounce back after a couple of tough one-goal losses. We need to continue building on this momentum throughout the rest of the week," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the win.
The Colonials broke the ice when junior midfielder Darion Richeme' (Danbury, CT) flipped the ball to classmate forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) who quickly tapped it back to Richeme' as he blasted a shot into the top-right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of play.
Shortly thereafter, rookie Harrison Allers (Morristown, NJ) took a pass from classmate Mikey Sciortino (Shelton, CT) and netted his first collegiate career goal, widening the gap to 2-0 heading into halftime.
WestConn picked up right where they left off in the second stanza. Junior midfielder Robert Della Penna (Suffield, CT) and Chauncey Allers connected on a give-and-go play as Della Penna then notched his fifth goal of the season, stretching the advantage to 3-0.
Less than four minutes later, Sciortino knocked a header into the back of the net off a corner kick boot from Della Penna to round the count out at 4-0.
Junior netminder Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) moved to 7-3 while turning aside one shot for the Colonials, while junior goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, CT) fell to 5-6-1 while recording seven saves.
WestConn returns to action at non-league opponent John Jay on Thursday at 7 p.m.
