Allers Notches Game-Winner as Men’s Soccer Edges RIC, 1-0

DANBURY, CT – Junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) chipped a shot into the top of the net off a free-kick feed from sophomore Spencer Ranno (Sherman, CT) in the 82nd minute of play as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team edged visiting Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at The Westside Athletic Complex.

With the victory, the Colonials improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Anchormen dropped to 6-6-1 and 3-2. "We certainly had our chances. Despite some great saves from the RIC goalkeeper, we kept our composure and were able to finally knock in the game-winner," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the victory. "We've now won three straight. Hopefully, we can continue to build on this momentum," he added.

The Colonials played a solid first half but were unable to find the back of the net. Allers had an attempt from the right wing stopped before rookie Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, CT) weaved through a pair of defenders and had his blast to the top-left corner saved by a diving RIC rookie netminder Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, RI).

Sophomore Spencer Ranno (Sherman, CT) and senior Shane Bierfeldt (Torrington, CT) made some stellar defensive plays to break up rushes from the Anchormen as the game remained scoreless at the break.

The host continued their shot barrage in the second half (outshooting the visitors, 21-6, for the game). A Bierfeldt header off a corner kick lob was blocked by a defender as it was just about to cross the goal line inside the right post midway through the stanza. Shortly thereafter, Allers was able to pierce the scoring column for his team-leading 11th goal of the season, sealing the win.

Junior goalkeeper Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) improved to 8-3 and recorded four saves for the Colonials, while Tashjian fell to 6-5-1 despite making 11 saves for the Anchormen.

WestConn will seek to extend its winning streak when they meet visiting non-conference foe Ramapo College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
