PLYMOUTH, NH – Rookie forward Mikey Sciortino (Shelton, CT) netted his second consecutive game-winning goal as the Western Connecticut State University men's soccer squad rallied to edge Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Arold Field.
With the road win, the Colonials improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in league play and secured a berth in the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament. It will be the second-straight season that WestConn owns one of the four coveted spots.
"It was certainly an important game for us. Despite being down in the second half, our players stepped up and showed tremendous tenacity," said WestConn head coach Joe Mingachos following the hard-fought win. "It's nice to wrap up a spot in the LECs, but we have a tough one left with UMass Boston that we need to concentrate on first."
Trailing 2-1 early in the second stanza, junior forward Chauncey Allers (Wilton, CT) took a cross from senior Darion Richeme' (Danbury, CT) and knocked a header into the twine, notching his second goal of the contest and team-leading 13th goal of the season for the Colonials.
Shortly thereafter, Sciortino booted home his sixth goal of the season when he fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for the game-winner in the 70thminute of play.
WestConn rookie goalkeeper Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, CT) improved to 4-3 overall as he combined with senior Luca DiCarlo (Waterbury, CT) to record six saves. Plymouth's Linus Lindeberg dropped to 4-6 and finished with four saves for the hosts.
The Panthers fall to 5-9 and 3-3.
The Colonials return to action Tuesday at non-conference opponent Westfield State before wrapping up the regular season slate against visiting LEC foe UMass-Boston on Saturday.
