CLERMONT, FL - The Western Connecticut State University softball team claimed a 2-1 victory over Amherst in its morning game, then came back in the afternoon and took a 5-4 win over Bowdoin, before wrapping up a successful Florida trip with a 7-2 defeat of Manchester Friday afternoon.
In Western's morning game, senior Jessica Caturano (Holbrook, NY) scored in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie and give the Colonials a 2-1 victory over Amherst.
In game two, Western fought back after allowing the first three Bowdoin batters to score. With the scored tied 4-4 after six innings, junior Julia Bocek (Southington, CT) led off the top of the seventh with a home run that lifted the Colonials to a 5-4 win.
In the day's third game, and Western's final game of their week-long trip to Florida, the Colonials scored five runs (four unearned) in the final two innings to break open a 2-2 tie and take 7-2 win over Manchester.
With the trio of wins, Western improves its 2014 record to 12-4 and now heads north for the remainder of the season. The Colonials return to action on Tuesday, March 25, when they are scheduled to host Westfield State in the home opener at Westside Field. Weather permitting, first pitch is schedule for 3:30pm.
