VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Western Connecticut softball team opened the season with a 3-2 victory over Case Western Reserve on Friday to open their spring trip at the Beach Blast. Later in the day, the Colonials fell to Virginia Wesleyan, 10-0. Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) tossed a complete game to notch a win in the opener, before coming on in relief in the second game to strike out a pair.
Case Reserve jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single from shortstop Nicole Doyle. The game remained 1-0 until WestConn put together a surge in the bottom of the sixth. Junior outfielder Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) tallied an RBI when she reached on a fielder's choice, scoring junior Tori Dugan (Norwalk, CT) who reached on an error. Moments later, the Colonials put together a double steal as Gaudioso swiped second and senior outfielder Alexandra LaFemina (East Haddam, CT) took home, giving the Colonials a 2-1 lead. Gaudioso then came around to score on another fielding error.
Case tacked on a run in top of the seventh before Smith got final two batters to fly out en route to the win.
WestConn met up with a strong opponent in the second contest as Virginia Wesleyan entered with an 11-0 record. The Colonials were held hitless. However, Smith came on to strike out a pair of tough hitters in relief.
Western (1-1 overall) returns to action against RIT on Saturday at 10 a.m. before meeting Rowan at Noon.
