Softball Drops Twinbill to St. Benedict and St. Mary's

CLERMONT, FL - After sweeping a doubleheader to start its Florida trip yesterday, the Western Connecticut softball team fell to St. Benedict, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon. Rookie shortstop Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) paced the Colonials with a pair of RBI's to go along with a run scored. WestConn was downed by St. Mary's (IN) in the nightcap, 9-3.

The teams combined to score eight of the total nine runs in the opening inning. Saint Benedict jumped out to a five-run lead in the top of the first. The Colonials retaliated with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the frame. Plasczynski smacked a triple to score junior Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) – who reached after getting hit by a pitch – and rookie Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) – who doubled to lead off the inning. Freshman catcher Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT) then singled to send Plasczynski across the plate, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The count remained the same until Sara Wennerstrand drilled a homer, extending Saint Benedict's lead to 6-3 in the top of the seventh. WestConn was unable to rally in the bottom half. Rookie hurler Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) took the loss for the Colonials despite pitching a complete game, while Alex Smith improved to 4-0 for Saint Benedict, while also going the distance.

In the nightcap, St. Mary's of Indiana defeated the Colonials, 9-3 behind a stellar pitching performance by Zoe Bruni.  She allowed just two hits, both coming from Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT), including a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Freshman Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) drew a two-out walk in the opening inning then came around on Plaszynski's round tripper.

Tori Dugan (Norwalk, CT), who led off the sixth inning by being hit by a pitch from Bruni, touched the dish after the freshman short stop's second hit of the game.

Cassie Young and Kelsey Richards paced St. Mary's.  Each belted a home run.  Richards went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in for the winners.

Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) suffered the loss for the Colonials.  She was chased after allowing four runs on four hits and walking two after allowing a free pass to Alyssa Gutierrez to lead off the second frame.  Smith is now 2-2 on the young season.

The Colonials, now 4-4, continue action on Monday with games against Arcadia University and Washington University of St. Louis.
