Charlien Plasczynski belts fourth homer of the season, but Colonials drop a pair to New Paltz

DANBURY, CT - Freshman shortstop Charlie Plasczynski hit a three-run home run, her fourth round tripper of the season, but it was not enough to fend off visiting SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday night at Westside Field.  The Hawks came back to capture the opener, 7-6 then blanked the Western Connecticut softball team, 3-0 in the nightcap.

WestConn raced out to a 3-1 advantage after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.  Kayla Nowak (Northford, CT) belted a run-scoring triple then came across following a wild pitch from Hawks starter and winner Lauren Cappello (New City, NY).  Nowak finished the opener by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

New Paltz, now 9-13, scored six runs, four of them unearned, in the top of the sixth inning to chase starter Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) then eventually saddling Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) with the loss.  She is now 3-4 on the season.

Plasczynski's homer highlighted the Colonials' three-run sixth inning by Cappello steadied and closed out the victory.  She allowed six runs on five hits while striking out six and walking one.  Cappello improves to 7-8 on the year.

Cappello also led the Hawks' offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Taylor Lafrance (New Windsor, NY) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and one runs scored for the winners.

In the nightcap, Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT) collected two of WestConn's three singles.  Alexandra LaFemina (East Haddam, CT), the only senior of the Colonials roster, went 1-for-2 with a walk.

Kiersten Carlomango (Commack, NY) hurled the complete-game shut out, striking out six and walking three.  She improves to 2-4 in the center circle.

Freshman righty Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) suffered the loss but pitched seven strong innings.  She allowed three runs, two of them earned, on five hits while striking out six and walking a pair.  She is now 3-2 on the season.

Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, NY) and Cappello each had a hit and a run batted in in the shut out.

Ten did not turn out to not be a great number for the Colonials tonight.  It has been 10 days since they last played a game since they swept University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-3 and 7-3, in a Little East Conference doubleheader back on April 2.  They allowed 10 runs in Wednesday's twinbill and fall to 10-10 on the season.

WestConn returns to action on Friday, April 14 when it travels to College of Staten Island for a double dip with the Dolphins.  Game time for the opener is set for 1 pm.
