Jenna Gaudioso belts two home runs in doubleheader split with Southern Maine

DANBURY, CT - Junior right fielder Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) went 5-for-8 with two home runs and three runs batted in as the Western Connecticut State University softball team split it doubleheader with University of Southern Maine, dropping the opener 8-4 before blanking the Huskies, 8-0 in five innings of the nightcap at Westside Field on Saturday afternoon.

Gaudioso, who hit five home runs as a freshman, but went without a round tripper as a sophomore, wrapped a home run in each game on Saturday.

Southern Maine scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings to take a 4-1 advantage after scoring a pair of unearned runs in the third frame off of WestConn's Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA).  Smith came on in relief of Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) after she was pulled after the third batter of the game.

The Colonials scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the contest at 4-4.  In the innings, Natalia Hart (Milford, CT) and Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT) each had an RBI.  Their other run in the inning came following a wild pitch from eventual winner Alexis Brown (Malden, MA).

The Huskies came right back in the ensuing inning to scored four runs, three of them unearned.  Brooke Cross (Saco, ME) had a two-RBI single to left field.  She then came around to score a run after Gaudioso dropped a fly ball on the right-field line.

Cross went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored.

Brown, 3-2 after the opener, retired the side in the bottom of the seventh including striking out the final two Colonials.

Smith suffered the loss after going six and two-third innings.  She allowed six runs, only one of them earned as Western committed four errors in the opener, on 11 hits.  Smith struck out five and walked one.  She is now 3-6 on the campaign.

Freshman lefty Sara Tenke (Glen Cove, NY) hurled a mercy-rule shortened, five-inning shut out in the nightcap.  She allowed just three hits while striking out six and walking three.

WestConn, now 11-13 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference, scattered 11 hits including a 4-for-4, including her second homer of the day, performance from Gaudioso in the second game.  Her single through the left side in the seventh inning plated Hart, who reached after being hit by a pitch with two outs by Chrystal West (South Paris, ME), the Huskies four pitcher in the nightcap.

Charline Plaszynski (Bristol, CT) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, an RBI and one runs scored.

Taylor Lux (Arundel, ME), Mary Caron (Lewiston, ME) and Allison Pillar (Hollis, ME) registered the Huskies hits in the second game.

WestConn travels to Rhode Island College on Tuesday, April 18.  The Colonials and Anchorwomen are scheduled to start their twinbill at 5 pm in Providence, RI.  Southern Maine, now 9-10 overall and 2-2 in the league, play host to Plymouth State University on Tuesday with a 3:30 pm first pitch.
