DANBURY, CT – After sweeping a doubleheader against conference rival Rhode Island College on Tuesday night, the Western Connecticut State University softball team downed visiting non-league foe Trinity College, 6-2, on a soggy Wednesday night at Westside Field. With the win, the Colonials improved to 14-13 overall, while the Bantams dropped to 17-10.
"Considering the conditions, the team played very well against Trinity and earned a quality win. Mother Nature proved to ultimately win but we were happy to get the opportunity in to play one game and build off last off yesterday's momentum," said Colonials head coach Heather Stone following the victory.
WestConn rookie right-handed pitcher Angelina Miller (Holbrook, NY) improved to 4-2, tossing a complete game while scattering six hits and surrendering just two runs – both coming in the final frame. Junior outfielder Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, CT) paced the Colonials with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate to go along with a pair of runs scored, while rookie shortstop Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, CT) chipped in with a solo homer.
The hosts broke the ice in the bottom of the first when Gaudioso scored on a wild pitch after knocking a triple to right. They widened the gap to 2-0 when Plasczynski led off the third with her blast over the center field wall. Freshman Jenna Houlahan (Yorktown Heights, NY) drilled a pinch hit double to left, scoring senior outfielder Alexandra LaFemina (East Haddam, CT), who led off the fourth with a single to left, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Colonials would put up a three-spot in the sixth highlighted by a run scoring double down the left field line from rookie catcher Kam Geysen (East Hampton, CT). Down 6-0, Trinity tried to put together a rally in the seventh. Junior Michelle Treglia (Fairfield, CT) and sophomore Courtney Erickson (Everett, MA) each notched RBI singles, cutting the deficit to 6-2. With two runners on base, Miller reached back to earn the strike out, sealing the victory for the Colonials.
The second game of the doubleheader was then called due to poor field conditions. WestConn returns to action against visiting Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State for a doubleheader slated for Saturday at Noon.
