PLYMOUTH, NH - Sophomore shortstop Charline Plasczynski (Bethel, CT) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of runs batted in to help the Western Connecticut State University softball team defeat the University of Southern Maine, 4-2 in the opening round of the Little East Conference double-elimination softball tournament at Panther Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Colonials will face the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, who defeated Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 in eight innings earlier in the day, at noon on Friday
Sophomore Erica Bower (Hillsborough, NJ) added a two-run triple to the Colonials' seven-hit attack.
Senior center fielder Kayla Nowak (Norhtford, CT) went 2-for-3 and scored three runs for the winners.
Sophomore righty Angelina Miller (Glen Cove, NY) improved to 10-9 after allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out three and walked two before handing the ball off to Jaclyn Smith (Sandwich, MA) for the final three innings. She picked up her first save of the season after allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Alexis Brown suffered the loss for the Huskies. She is now 9-4 on the year. She allowed four runs on six hits over five innings of work, struck out two and walked a pair.
Taylor Lux went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in the Huskies' two-run fourth inning.
Southern Maine will be the opening act on Friday, at 10 am, and face the University of Massachusetts Boston. The Beacons defeated top seed Plymouth State in the tournament's opener on Thursday.
