Sherwood Pours in Game-High 33 Points as Women’s Basketball Falls to Eastern Nazarene in Season Opener, 102-94
WALTHAM, MA – Despite a game-high 33 points from junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team suffered a season-opening 102-94 loss, falling to Eastern Nazarene at the Brandeis Tip-off Tournament on Friday evening. The Colonials will return to action in Day Two of the tournament when they meet Mitchell College – who lost to host Brandeis – in the consolation game on Saturday.

WestConn jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. However, Eastern Nazarene countered to hold a 19-10 advantage late in the opening quarter. The Colonials would respond and pull to within two points (31-29) when sophomore guard Genesis Torres (Stratford, CT) sank a free throw.

Eastern Nazarene would put together another spurt en route to a 53-46 halftime lead. The margin grew to 65-48 before WestConn erupted for a 14-0 run midway through the third. Sophomore guard Kathiana Monestime (Somerville, MA) ignited the flurry with two of her nine points on an offensive putback before rookie guard Frances Snyder (Pine Plains, NY) capped the barrage with a three-pointer, slicing the deficit to 65-62.

However, Eastern Nazarene would not relinquish the lead as they controlled the pace much of the final quarter en route to the win.

"We are running an entirely new system this year and it's going to take some time to learn and adjust to the intensity of it. All in all, I was happy with our first outing and we will only get better as time goes on," said WestConn head coach Kimberley Rybczyk following the defeat.
