DANBURY, CT – After scorching Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon, the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team surged past visiting non-conference foe Purchase College, 129-63, on Tuesday evening at the O'Neill Center's Feldman Arena. Junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) netted a game-high 36 points, while senior guard Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, CT) chipped in with 28 for the Colonials. Junior guard Amber Jones (Bronx, NY) paced Purchase with 19, while senior guard Kayla Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY) added 15.
"We worked hard tonight and continue to learn a lot about ourselves as we develop our new style of play," said WestConn head coach Kimberley Rybczyk following the win in which the Colonials tallied a record-breaking 129 points after shattering the old school mark with 128 against Mitchell just one game ago.
Rookie forward Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) also notched a key contribution for the Colonials with a double-double on the strength of 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Colonials used their high intensity work ethic to race out to a 36-17 to end the opening quarter. The contest began with a 27-6 run sparked by a LaBonte three-pointer (she finished 6-of-17 from beyond the arc for the game).
The hosts widened the gap to 64-28 midway through the second stanza when LaBonte took a nifty feed from sophomore guard Kathiana Monestime (Somerville, MA) and scooped a layup off the glass.
The margin would balloon to 55 points when Sherwood knocked down one of her six trifectas to close out the third quarter.
WestConn would not let up in the fourth as the barrage from downtown continued when rookie forward Sydney Gouveia (New Fairfield, CT) hit off an assist from classmate Megan Hasty (Vernon, CT), extending the lead to 127-60.
For the game, the Colonials buried 18-of-21 (85.6%) from the charity stripe and committed just 11 turnovers compared to the Panthers 12-of-22 (54.5%) from the line and 38 errors.
With the victory, WestConn improved to 2-1 overall, while Purchase dropped to 2-1. The Colonials return to action against visiting non-league opponent Albertus Magnus on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
