DARTMOUTH, MA – After storming past Mitchell College on Wednesday, the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team was downed at Little East Conference nemesis UMass-Dartmouth, 95-65, on Saturday afternoon at Tripp Athletic Center. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Corsairs improved to 6-2 and 2-0.
Junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY) and sophomore guard Jessica Davis (Hamden, CT) paced WestConn with 10 points apiece, while rookie forward Asiah Knight (Norwalk, CT) added a team-high 10 rebounds. Nakira Examond had a stellar outing for UMass-Dartmouth en route to a single game school-record 41 points (18-of-27 shooting) and game-high 13 boards, while Alicia Kutil chipped in with 26 points, which included her 1,000th career point.
The Colonials coughed the ball up 38 times compared to just 26 turnovers for the Corsairs. The hosts finished with 41 points off those turnovers compared to 17 for WestConn. UMass-Dartmouth finished shooting 41-of-94 (43.6%) from the field, while the visitors went just 22-of-68 (32.4%).
The hosts led from start to finish as they began the contest with a 19-5 run. They would widen the margin to seize a 50-23 halftime advantage. It was more of the same in the second half as the Corsairs breezed to the win.
WestConn will look to rebound from the loss when they meet visiting non-conference foe Mount St. Mary on Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m.
