Women’s Basketball Rally Comes Up Short, Edged at Plymouth, 94-87

PLYMOUTH, NH – Despite a team-high 26 points from junior guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, NY), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad was edged at Little East Conference nemesis Plymouth State, 94-87, on Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium. With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 10-11 overall and 3-7 in league play, while the Panthers improved to 6-15 and 2-8.

Sophomore guard Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, CT) added 17 points and a game-high four steals for the visitors, while classmate Emma Belcourt (Cromwell, CT) chipped in with 16 points.

Five players tallied double figures for Plymouth. Junior Jess Conant (Canton, ME) paced the Panthers with a game-high 27 points, while sophomore Brittany Roche (Londonderry, NH) added 20 to go along with nine rebounds. Junior guard Cassidy Emerson (Concord, NH) contributed with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The hosts shot a scorching 54.9% (39-for-71) from the floor compared to WestConn's 30.9% (25-for-81). The Panthers also controlled the battle on the glass, 59-33.

The contest was close to start before the Colonials opened things up with a 13-0 run midway through the first quarter to seize a 21-11 lead. Belcourt rounded the barrage out with a steal and a quick layup.

Plymouth responded by chipping away at the lead during the second quarter. They would eventually regain a 37-36 advantage when Cassidy snagged an offensive rebound and converted the putback just before halftime.

The Panthers continued the push as they would outscore the Colonials in the third quarter, 28-17. The lead grew to as many as 13 points when Conant hit a scoop shot off a feed from classmate Debra Morrill (Concord, NH), widening the gap to 59-46 before heading into the final stanza ahead, 65-53.

The Colonials rallied in the fourth, knotting the count at 81-81 when Sherwood buried a three-pointer with 3:08 remaining. Moments later, she sank another trifecta, giving WestConn an 87-86 lead with just under a minute to play. However, the Panthers went perfect from the free throw line (8-for-8) the rest of the way to earn the win.

WestConn returns to action when they meet visiting LEC foe Rhode Island College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
