Western women fall to Oneonta State, 19-14
KISSIMMEE, FL (Mar. 25) - Seniors Devon Edwards (Islip, NY) and Emily Brooks (Kingston, NY) each scored four goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team, but the Colonials fell to Oneonta State, 19-14, during their trip to Florida.
After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth minute, Oneonta ran off four straight goals to take a lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Freshmen Randal Cook (Northport/Northport) and Rebecca Fildes along with Donodeo and classmate Kiera McNally (East Northport/Northport) each scored a goal.
Both teams played even for the remaining 16 plus minutes with Oneonta taking a 7-4 lead into halftime.
The two squads cranked up the offense in the second half, combining for 22 goals. Western Connecticut (2-2) got to within one goal at 8-7 and 10-9, but couldn't get the equalizer. After the Colonials cut Oneonta's lead to 12-10, the Red Dragons put the game away with four unanswered to take its biggest lead of the game with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
Donodeo, McNally, classmate Nikki Fioretti and junior Chelsea Collins (St. James/Smithtown East) combined for nine of Oneonta's 12 goals in the second half.
With the loss, Western falls to 2-2 on the season, while Oneonta State now stands at 5-2. The Colonials return to action in Kissimmee on Thursday, March 27, when they face Buffalo State. Game time is slated for 10:00am.
