Western Connecticut dominated UMass Dartmouth, 20-4 in Little East opener

DANBURY, CT – Devon Edwards (Islip, NY), Brittany Paiva (Bethel, CT) and Emma Theiler (Waterford, CT) each scored three goals in Western Connecticut State University's 20-4 women's lacrosse victory over UMass Dartmouth at The WAC on Saturday afternoon.

Western, 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference raced out to a 3-0 advantage following a goal by Theiler, off an assist from Kristne Hudock (Newtown, CT) 6:43 into the contest.

Its lead grew to 10-1 after Edwards knotched her team-leading 22 goal of the season with 5:15 still to play before intermission.

After a conversion on a free-position attempt by Theiler with over 25 minutes to play, the Colonials led by the mercy-rule minimum of 10 goals the rest of the way.

Karli Portnoy earned the victory after making four saves before yielding to freshman net minder Alexa Lucchesi (Danbury, CT) for the final 20 minutes.  Lucchesi made two stops for the winners.

The Corsairs, now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the league, were led by Taylor Corsano's (Boune, MA) two goals.  Colleen Kane (Arlington, MA) and Brittney Enos (East Falmouth, MA) tallied the other two UMass Dartmouth goals.

Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA) suffered the loss despite making 17 saves on the afternoon.

Western outshot the Corsairs, 43-11 and dominated on ground balls, 50-22.

The Colonials play host to Manhattanville on Tuesday, April 2.  Game time is slated for 7 pm.
