Western women's lacrosse sinks Anchorwomen, 23-9

DANBURY, CT - Senior midfielder Hyla Costello (Southington, CT) scored seven goals and the Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team rolled to a 23-9 victory over visiting Rhode Island College at The Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.

For the second-straight Saturday, Costello went on a scoring frenzy.  A week ago, she netted eight goals in a 19-10 victory at UMass Dartmouth.  For her effort against the Corsairs, she was named Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Today, five of Costello's goals game in the second half as Western pulled away from the Anchorwomen.  She leads Western with 32 goals in eight games.

Freshman Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT), junior Kelsey Heaton (New Milford, CT) and senior Elena Gayton (Ellington, CT) each scored four goals for the winners.  

Kirsten Hudock (Newtown, CT) and Chandler Camlin (Stamford, CT) scored three and one goal, respectively for the Colonials.

The Anchorwomen took an early lead when Lauren Maisano (Bristol, RI) scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Jassalyn O'Neill (North Providence, RI).

Western scored six of the game's next seven goals and never looked back.  It took an 11-5 lead into the break.

Rhode Island College, 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the LEC, were paced by O'Neill, Jessica Ricci (Hope, RI) and Danielle Landon (Wading River, NY).  They each found the net twice on Saturday.

Senior Karli Portnoy (Sea Cliff, NY) was stellar in goal for the Colonials, now 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference.  She made 14 saves.

Taryn Carbone (Cranston, RI) was saddled with the loss after allowing 14 goals while making five saves in the game's first 35 minutes.  Ana Medeiros (New Bedford, MA) made one save over the final 25 minutes.

The Colonials hit the road for the next two game, beginning with a non-conference meeting with Ramapo College on Tuesday, April 8.  Game time is slated for 4 pm.
