ENGLEWOOD, FL - After downing Mount Holyoke to start its spring trip on Tuesday, the WestConn women's lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked (IWCLA Poll) Franklin & Marshall, 18-2, on Wednesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT) paced the Colonials with her team-leading 16th goal of the season, while also dishing out an assist.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) chipped in with her fourth goal of the year, while senior defender Carley Altemose (Stratford, CT) earned game-highs of five groundballs and three caused turnovers for WestConn. Senior netminder Missy O'Donnell (Bridgeport, CT) turned aside four shots for the Colonials, who moved to 2-2 overall, while Franklin & Marshall improved to 4-1.
Trailing 2-0, Carey threaded a pass to Bradshaw who found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1 less than four minutes into the contest. Carey then tallied her second point of the contest when she tickled the twine midway thru the first half.
However, Franklin & Marshall took control of the remainder of the game and showed why they are a nationally ranked squad. With the loss, O'Donnell dropped to 2-2 overall, while Danielle Harrington moved to 4-1.
"We always emphasize to our players that there is a positive with every negative. That was the case today. We lost but we learned a lot about ourselves that will help us down the road," said Colonials head coach Jennifer Thomas following the contest.
WestConn returns to action for its spring finale when they meet St. Mary's (IN) on Thursday at 8 a.m. in Port Charlotte, Florida.
