WESTFIELD, MA - Despite a team-high four goals from rookie attacker Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, CT), the WestConn women's lacrosse team was downed at non-conference opponent Westfield State, 20-12, on Wednesday night. Colonials senior midfielder Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) added a hat trick and two assists, while sophomore Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT) chipped in with a tally and a pair of assists. Senior Andrea Tarsi also notched a pair of goals for the visitors.
"It was a challenging game with two key players out (Olivia Kosilla & Destinee Carey). We had a lot of players who stepped up which was great to see. I give credit to senior Missy O'Donnell with 20 saves. It's draw controls and ground balls; we need to focus on the little things in order to get to big things," said WestConn head coach Jenn Thomas following the contest.
The hosts held a commanding edge in draw controls (25-9) and scoops (28-17), which led to them outshooting the Colonials, 45-24.
WestConn drew first blood 1:22 into the game when Baldelli scored, assisted by Gustafson. The hosts retaliated to take a 6-2 lead, capped by a goal from Stephanie Godek. The Colonials answered with a spurt of their own, cutting the lead to 6-5 when Baldelli found the back of the net off another sweet feed from Gustafson. However, Westfield turned the tide and slowly built their advantage back up, holding a 12-8 lead at the break.
Bradshaw pierced the scoring column on a free position shot to open the second half, but the hosts followed it up with a trio of goals, pulling ahead 15-9. After Westfield extended the margin to 17-11, rookie midfielder Geovanna Badaro (Fairfield, CT) netted a free position tally to wrap up the scoring for the Colonials.
With the loss, WestConn moved to 4-6 overall, while Westfield advanced to 6-3. The Colonials have a lengthy layoff before returning to the field, hosting non-league foe Western New England on Thursday, April 13 at 6 p.m.
