Autumn Sorice dials in a pair of goals as WestConn blanks Southern Maine, 6-0

GORHAM, ME - Senior Autumn Sorice (Bethel, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a 6-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Earning its sixth consecutive win, Western Connecticut remains undefeated at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Little East.  The Colonials have allowed just one goal all season, earning five shut outs, including the last three straight.  Southern Maine drops its second consecutive game to stand at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the LEC.

Sorice put the Colonials on the board early scoring just 1:13 into the game to notch the game-winner.  Sorice carried the ball into the box after beating out a USM defender and then going one-v-one with USM goalkeeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) for her first goal of the game and fourth of the season.  Sorice assisted on senior Andrea Devloe's (Farmington, Conn.) goal in the 15th minute to make it 2-0, before freshman Devon Shugdinis (Simsbury, Conn.) scored the third and final goal fo the half for WCSU in the 42nd minute. Shugdinis scored her first collegiate goal volleying in a service from senior Jenna Gentile (Norwalk, Conn.)

"It's nice to win on the road, especially when it comes to a league contest," stated WestConn head coach Alex Harrison.  "Our offense continues to put enough on the board and our defense was stifling again today."

WCSU tacked on three more goals in the second half, from Sorice (58:57), freshman Alexandra DeLuca (Bethel, Conn). (73:59) and Gentile (89:30) for the 6-0 final.  WCSU held a commanding 29-1 lead in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Senior goalkeeper Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, Conn.) played the first 45 minutes and did not make a save.  Freshman Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) played the final 45 without recording a save.  Canastra finished with nine saves in the loss.

Southern Maine travels to St. Joseph's College (Maine) on Monday (7 pm) for a non-conference game in its next action. Western Connecticut plays Manhattanville on Tuesday (4 pm) in a non-conference match up.
