DANBURY, CT - After sprinting out to a 2-1 advantage after the doubles action, visiting Bridgewater State University women's tennis team won five of six singles matches to roll to a 7-2 victory over Western Connecticut State University at Westside Courts on Tuesday afternoon.
Bojana Roman (Somerset, MA) and Alison Scagnelli (Sutton, MA) put the Bears up 1-0 after cruising to an 8-0 win over Sarah Warkowski (Brisol, CT) and Pooja Dudhedia (Brookfield, CT) at second flight doubles.
Western's Emma Chapman (Danbury, CT) and Carole Allers (Wilton, CT) evened the match in the early going after they defeated Alisha Silva (Taunton, MA) and Amanda Strickland (Plymouth, MA), 8-1 at number one pairs.
Rachel Tarantino (Mansfield, MA) joined Angelique Gray (Osterville, MA) put the visitors up to stay with an 8-3 victory over Carine Jacque' (New London, CT) and Karen Valez (Danbury, CT) at the final doubles match.
Chapman, a two-time Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, delivered the Colonials only win in singles action. She defeated Silva, 6-4, 6-2 at top flight solos.
Allers and Jacque' battled at #2 and #3 singles, but fell to Roman (6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and Scagnelli (4-6, 6-2, 10-5), respectively.
Strickland, Tarantino and Gray, in order, earned straight-set wins at the remaining three singles matches.
The Colonials fall to 3-5 on the season are winless in Little East Conference play at 0-3. The Bears improve to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the LEC.
Western next host Rutgers-Newark this Friday, Septbmer 30. Match time, which has changed twice is now set for 3:30 pm
