DANBURY, CT – Junior Carole Allers (Wilton, CT) and sophomore Sarah Warkoski (Bristol, CT) accounted for four of the six points to guide the WestConn women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Mount Saint Mary College in its season opener on Friday night at The Westside Courts. Rookie Lesley Coronel (Danbury, CT) also earned her first collegiate win as she team up with junior Clare Callahan (New Fairfield, CT) to notch a doubles point for the Colonials.
After seizing a 3-0 lead to conclude doubles play, WestConn continued to pour it on. Allers nailed a convincing 6-0, 6-0 singles win before Warkoski breezed through her match, 6-2, 6-1. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Pooja Dudhedia (Brookfield, CT) rallied under the lights for a three-set win in the fourth singles slot for the Colonials.
"Anytime you can wrap up the doubles play leading 3-0, it's a major confidence boost for our players as they go into singles play. It's definitely a nice way to start the season," said WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman after the match.
With the win, WestConn moved to 1-0 overall, while the visitors dropped to 0-1. The Colonials return to action when they meet division rival Salem State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
