DANBURY, CT – After downing non-conference opponent yesterday, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team upended visiting Salem State University, 7-2, in the Little East Conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Westside Courts. With the win, the Colonials avenged last year's shutout loss and improved to 2-0 overall, while the Vikings dropped to 0-1.
For the second consecutive match, WestConn sophomore Pooja Dedhedia (Brookfield, CT) rallied to win a singles match, this time besting sophomore Jackie Garvey (Melrose, MA) 2-6, 6-1, 1-0. She earlier teamed up with rookie Lesley Coronel (Danbury, CT) to notch a doubles win, 8-5.
"Our players were focused today. All of the matches were competitive and our players did a great job finishing. They wanted a chance to redeem themselves after last year's loss and made it happen," said WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following the redemption.
The Colonials return to action at non-league opponent Pratt tomorrow (Sunday) at Noon.
