Colonials drop first match of the season to John Jay, 5-3

DANBURY, CT - The Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season when it fell to John Jay College, 5-3, at Westside Courts on Thursday night.

The tandem of Emma Chapman (Danbury, CT) and Carole Allers (Wilton, CT) captured the top doubles match by blanking Bernarda Reyes and Rageane Berry, 8-0.  It would be the only pair match-up to go in the Colonials favor.

After a 30 minute delay due to lightning in the area, freshman Lesley Coronel (Danbury, CT) defeated Gabriela Schuck, 6-2 and 6-3 at fifth flight singles.

Junior Clare Callahan (New Fairfield, CT) earned the final match for the host as she defeated Dominigue Dawkins, 7-6, 6-1 at sixth solos.

"It's always disappointing to lose, but the positive taken out of today's match was our wins at five and six singles," said head coach Shawn Stillman.  "The bottom of our line-up is stronger this season, which will help us in the long run."

WestConn travels to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a Little East Conference match with the Corsairs on Saturday, September 16.  First serve is set for 1 pm.
