DANBURY, CT – After upending Purchase State on Friday, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team was downed by visiting conference opponent Worcester State, 6-3, on Tuesday evening at Westside Courts. Junior Carole Allers (Wilton, CT) and sophomore Emma Chapman (Danbury, CT) each notched singles wins, while combining to win their doubles matchup to lead the Colonials.
Junior Lianne Maynard (Milford, CT) began her singles match with a second set rally for the hosts. However, Worcester junior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, MA) battled back to capture the third set. Shortly thereafter, WestConn rookie Lesley Coronel (Danbury, CT) dropped the opening set of her match, 6-3. She led 5-4 in the second set before her opponent – rookie Monika Mularski (Auburn, MA) - would rally to seize the frame, 7-5, concluding the contest.
"I anticipated that this match would have been won by either team at a very close score. If Lianne's and Lesley's match both went to a third set, who knows what would have happened. It was an exciting match," said WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman after the battle.
With the loss, the Colonials dropped to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Lancers improved to 6-1 and 3-1. WestConn returns to action at St. Joseph's on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
